sci275 - The article I chose is a comparative study about how anti-depressants should be monitored by type as the more “toxic” ones have been linked to higher suicide rates in the depressed. This article talks about the many different types of anti-depressants that can be offered to patients suffering from depression and which ones have been used in cases where suicide, or attempted suicide, was the case. The author’s main point is to provide substantial data and information about safer anti-depressants available which can be used in hopes to decrease suicide rates.

The authors used information gathered from both case studies and also poison control data about the different types of anti-depressants and how they apply to suicide rates in patients.   According to the article the anti-depressants that are used and prescribed more often are unsafe and have been linked to higher suicide rates. The author suggests alternative anti-depressants that have lower suicide rates connected to them.

sci 275 class The methodological orientation that best reflects the research methods used in this article would be Scientific Sociology. Scientific sociology is defined by our weekly reading as “a logical system that bases knowledge on direct, systematic observation.” The information gathered in the article is based on empirical evidence, or data we can verify. The information in the article is reliable and valid and it all has a distinct correlation to one another. Meaning that, according to the findings, patients on certain anti-depressants have a higher risk of suicide. There is a specific correlation between   the more “toxic” anti-depressants and higher suicide rates.
